From City solicitor to eco-artivist

I have always practiced art as a way of life. Whether selling my drawings on the street or collecting candle wax from churches to re-melt as a child, drawing medieval scenes for fairs as a teenager, or frantically modeling clay as a solicitor, art has always played an essential role in my life. However, I initially chose to study and practice Law in Italy, England, France, and NYC, believing art was ‘too enjoyable to be a job’.

After having children and a striking visit to the mosaics in Aquileia, I finally gave in to my nature and graduated with distinction in Mosaic and Fine Arts from the London School of Mosaic in 2019, where I also lectured in 2021/22.

Throughout my career, I have explored various professions, from interior designer to in-house legal, working with ex-CIA and ex-SAS agents, from City Solicitor to mosaicist and lecturer. Embracing unconventional paths and pioneering endeavors has been a recurring theme. Despite achieving success, I often felt like I was inhabiting someone else's shoes, fueling my drive to explore and expand my knowledge.

I have exhibited in over 100 venues, been published in over 90 articles and textbooks, and won over two dozen international awards.

I founded the Payment in Kind(ness)© initiative, accepting eco-friendly actions as payment, and ArtforTrash©, creating artwork from clients’ waste for various settings.

My eco-artivism emerged from my natural propension for art and eco-conscious upbringing. I run pro bono art projects on eco-awareness and sustainability with schools, individuals, and organizations. I have collaborated with Living Streets, Salon Sustainability, Fernando Montaño, The Camden Clean Air Initiative (Earthfest 2024), and several schools. My longest collaboration was "A Breath of Fresh Air" with the London International Gallery of Children’s Art, involving five schools in London and Delhi, culminating in an exhibition at the Nehru Centre in Mayfair.

During the 2020 Lockdown, I embraced performance art through the Getty challenge, recreating artworks with make-do props. Four recreations were published by the Getty Museum in their "Off the Walls" book, supporting artists in need.

I enjoy creating layered narratives through staged layered photography, building stories around my physical artworks. I give inspirational talks and presentations to art professionals and corporate or institutional environments.

After a year-long collaboration which included a residency during the Venice Boat Show 2024, I am now on a collaboration retainer with the Institute of Marine Sciences in Venice for the next few years.

Since January 2025 I am also the new Art teacher at the Italian School in London (SIAL), and I am thrilled!

I am a member of Insights Of An EcoArtist (IOAEA) and a partner of ActforEaling. I am also a member of BAMM, Heritage Crafts, VAA, and Mensa, and a proud supporter of Neptune’s Pirates, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, WSPA, and WWF, to whom I donate 10% of the income from any ArtforTrash commission.

  • There are some people you instantly taking a liking to, sometimes even before meeting them in person, and this was precisely what happened to me with Francesca, when we began communicating via email regarding the art exhibition we were curating together as part of the Chelsea Fringe Art Festival at Oxford House in Bethnal Green. Her generous, helpful and incredibly enthusiastic attitude were palpable even through her writing, and meeting her in person only accentuated my immediate appreciation of her. A real, authentic person to the core, she is almost ridiculously charismatic and warm-hearted. Her profound concern and activism for the environment made me question how much more I could personally do to help in that way, and I found myself making a number of changes in my life to use as little plastic as possible and encourage others to do the same. Furthermore, Francesca’s boundless creativity has always left me fascinated. I absolutely love her work and have visited other exhibitions of hers since we worked together. The wonders she can create with, literally, rubbish are both mind-boggling and an indication of how a creative mind can take the first guiding steps towards building a better future.   • I have known Francesca for approximately 8 years through our mutual love of mixed media and mosaics. Throughout this time, she has been at the forefront of pushing boundaries with her experimental work in rubbish recycling for art.   • The chocolate bar wrapper, the disposable coffee cup, the furniture that we replace because it looks a little tatty. We live in an age where most ofus are producing waste at a monumental level. Francesca Busca is not most of us and her commitment to live a sustainable life extends to her art where she repurposes hairdresser's foils, papers and magazines, cork, leftover paint, bottle caps and crisp and popcorn packers to create art that promotes sustainability. She will work with clients to create art from their own waste and will even accept eco-friendly actions in lieu of payment for her art. Creating the words 'love' and 'live' out of rubbish it's both a critique of how wasteful we can all be, but also a beacon of optimism as it's now well known that we're facing an ecological crisis and Francesca remains optimistic that we can find a way to address the climate crisis.   • The Institute of Marine Sciences of the Italian National Research Institute has recently had the opportunity to collaborate with Francesca Busca. During a 10-day residency, Francesca created a site specific installation titled “Sea it!” and realized by using the trash collected by CNR-ISMAR in its offices, labs, research vessel and offshore research platform. She was able to not only create a remarkable art piece, but also to engage with the scientists and staff members, fostering a sense of shared purpose and enthusiasm. Francesca’s unique ability to inspire and engage those around her is truly commendable. Her interaction with the scientists and staff members of ISMAR was so impactful that it led to a formal collaboration contract, extending their partnership. Francesca’s work goes beyond creating art; it fosters a sense of community and promotes a greater understanding of environmental issues. The presentation of the “Sea it!” art piece during the 2024 Venice Boat Show was a significant milestone. It provided an excellent platform to engage visitors in the activities of the institute and raise awareness about marine litter.
